A high-performance endorsement is required under 14 CFR 61.31(f) before a pilot can act as pilot in command of a high-performance airplane, which the regulation defines as an airplane with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. The pilot must receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor and demonstrate proficiency in the operation and systems of the airplane. The instructor then provides a one-time logbook endorsement.

A complex aircraft endorsement is required under 14 CFR 61.31(e) before a pilot can act as pilot in command of a complex airplane. Under 14 CFR 61.1(b), a complex airplane has retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller. The pilot must receive and log ground and flight training from an authorized instructor and demonstrate proficiency in the operation and systems of the airplane. The instructor then provides a one-time logbook endorsement.

Is there a checkride for these endorsements?
No. Neither the high-performance nor complex aircraft endorsement requires a separate FAA practical test. After you complete the required training and demonstrate proficiency, an authorized instructor provides the appropriate one-time logbook endorsement.
Do I need a complex endorsement for the commercial checkride?
Not necessarily. For a single-engine commercial pilot certificate, 14 CFR 61.129(a)(3)(ii) requires 10 hours of training in a complex airplane, turbine-powered airplane, technically advanced airplane, or a combination of those aircraft. For a multiengine commercial pilot certificate, 14 CFR 61.129(b)(3)(ii) requires 10 hours of training in a multiengine complex or turbine-powered airplane. These are commercial pilot training requirements and are separate from the complex-aircraft logbook endorsement under 14 CFR 61.31(e).
